Tomorrow is your lucky day! The clouds willpart, and a host of angels will serenade the world as Google GOOG +0.28% makesGoogle Glass available to anyone and everyone who wants it (although I assumethere is a limited supply).
Of course, it will still cost you $1500.Ouch. While it seems interesting in anovelty, parlor trick sort of way, it isn’t something even remotely worth $1500in my opinion. My 16 year old son pointed out that you can buy THREE OculusRift kits for $1500, while my 19 year old son said, “I’d rather buy 1500 doublecheeseburgers from McDonald’s.”
Well, I don’t think anyone needs to havethree Oculus Rift kits (although playing with just one would be pretty cool),and I think it’s debatable whether or not 1500 double cheeseburgers constitutesa “better” investment than $1500 for Google Glass, but there are better ways tospend that kind of money.
Here are 10 better ways to spend $1500instead of buying Google Glass:
1. New Appliances
If you’re like most families, you’ve hadyour eye on a new washer and dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator, or some othermajor household appliance for some time. As cool as it might be to be able totake pictures with your glasses, having clean clothes and dishes, and cold foodare pretty awesome too.
2. Overdue Car Maintenance
Sure, you eventually get the oil changedafter the light has been on for a couple thousand miles, and you never drivemore than a week listening to that ear-piercing screeching noise before you getyour brake pads replaced, but when was the last time you had real maintenancedone on your vehicle—like a tune up, or transmission fluid change? If you crackopen the owner’s manual, you will find a complete list of recommendedmaintenance that will help your car run better, get better mileage, and lastlonger—possibly saving much more than $1500 in the long run.
3. Pay Off Credit Cards
It will take 41 months to pay off a $1500credit card balance at 18 percent interest if you just pay $50 per month. Inthe meantime, you will also have paid more than $500 in interest on that debt.Just pay the whole thing off now with that $1500 that’s burning a hole in yourpocket. You will free up $50 per month you can use to pay other bills, or buymore drinks at Starbucks SBUX +0.86%, and you’ll free up the credit on yourcard so you have it available for an emergency—like when your dishwasher stopsworking, or your car needs work done on the transmission.
4. Family Vacation
It would be super awesome to be able towatch yourself having sex just by saying “OK Glass, it’s time.” Rather thanspending $1500 on something you’d probably like to forget, though, invest that$1500 making lasting memories for you and your family. You won’t get far on$1500 with a family of four, but there’s probably a Six Flags somewhere withinweekend-trip driving distance. Or, check out VRBO and choose a destination.Depending on the time of year, you could stay in a beachside condo overlookingthe ocean for a week for that money.
5. New Computer
If you’re one of the vocal masses stillusing Windows XP, and defiantly yelling from the rooftop that you can’t affordto upgrade every decade…I mean, every time Microsoft MSFT -0.07% asks, you haveabsolutely no business blowing $1500 on Google Glass. Even if you aren’t stillclinging to XP, if your computer is more than a few years old, you might bewise to invest in an upgrade. There are newer technologies and processors thatwill improve your experience—especially if you have a laptop. There arehundreds of powerful desktop and laptop computers available for $1500 or less.
6. Invest It
If you buy Google Glass, all you’ll have 25years from now is an obsolete gadget …and regret. If you invest that $1500 andget a 10 percent annual rate of return, you will have over $16,000 even if younever add another penny. You could triple that money to almost $50,000—even atonly a 10 percent rate of return—if you continue to contribute $25 per month tothe investment. Or, if you can find a higher rate of return—like 12 percent—youcould amass over $70,000 by investing that $1500 and continuing to add $25 permonth over 25 years.
7. Education
You won’t get far on $1500 at a majoruniversity, but you can take a few classes at a community college with thatkind of money, or perhaps attend a conference or obtain a certification relatedto your profession. It’s a different sort of investment—an investment inyourself. If you improve yourself professionally, it could result in a raise orpromotion that will pay dividends worth far more than the $1500 you spent.
8. Season Tickets
If you insist on being frivolous with your$1500, consider buying season tickets for the sport and team you love the most.Watching games on TV has its advantages, but there is something special aboutthe atmosphere of being there, and being a “part” of it all. Season ticketprices vary by city and sport, but I’m pretty sure you can see a whole lot ofgames for $1500.
9. Treat Your Significant Other
If the last time you bought yoursignificant other jewelry was your wedding day, you’re overdue. You won’t get aKim Kardashian-sized diamond for $1500, but there are a whole lot of jewelryoptions out there for $1500. It works for men too. I’ve had my eye on a Movadowatch for over a decade, and I’d much rather my wife surprise me with thatwatch than waste the money on Google Glass. Your significant other wouldprobably love to receive something meaningful—especially if it isn’t a specialoccasion like a birthday or anniversary. Just because.
10. Give It To Charity
Why not? There are so many worthy causes inthe world that could benefit from your $1500. You would be doing society a hugefavor twice. First, by not becoming a “Glasshole”, and second by contributingto the greater good of whatever cause or charity tugs at your heart strings.
When Google Glass is launched to thegeneral public, it will have to be at a drastically lower price to gain anytraction at all—like under $300. $1500 is a lot to pay for a few months ofhipster exclusivity. Hopefully, Google will refund the difference to all thoseit cons into buying Google Glass tomorrow for $1500.
